Provenance
Published by The Lakeside Studio, Lakeside, Michigan; printed by Howard JonesProvenance:The ArtistThence by descent to the current ownerLot Note:Brown's depiction of a mother and child was drawn from his memory of a dramatic childhood experience. As described by Gregory Brown:My mother was holding his hand while helping him to cross the street in front of their house. Roger would’ve been about five years old at this time and mother would’ve seemed a very domineering figure to him. There was a car passing in front of them and mother pulled Roger away from the road. There was some barbed wire fencing along the side of the road and Roger snagged his leg on it as he was pulled back. At the time I’m sure it was a traumatic experience for him.Related through Brown's signature silhouetted figures and strong use of geometric patterns, he leverages his personal experience of cars and barbed wire into a universal one, of a mother securely holding a child away from danger, now out of the reach of the road.We would like to thank Gregory Brown for his contribution to the cataloguing of this lot.
